Write to Win! is a competition for 18 to 40 year old Atlantic Canadians who write literary fiction or non-fiction. A $1,500 prize and publication offer will be awarded to the first place winner. $1,000 and $500 will be awarded to the second and third place winners, respectively. Entries should be original, unpublished works 20,000 to 60,000 words long and written for adult, young adult and/or teen readers.


Meet the Judges

George Elliott Clarke is a renowned Canadian poet and playwright and is currently serving as the Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate. He was appointed to the Order of NS in 2006 and the Order of Canada in 2008. He is a professor of Canadian Literature at the university of Toronto and has published numerous award winning literary works. He is a recipient of the Governor General's Award for English Language Poetry.  GeorgeE

Sheree Fitch is a storyteller, educator, speaker and award-winning author of over 30 books. She writes in all genres for all ages and is owner of Mabel Murple's Book Shoppe and Dreamery in River John, Nova Scotia. There are donkeys and other critters in the Dreamery.    Fitch

Wanda Lauren Taylor is an author, filmmaker and educator. With a background in social work and advocacy, Wanda lectures on social justice and human rights issues. She is a former CBC TV producer and the author of three books, including Birchtown and the Black Loyalist, listed as one of the top Black history books for young readers by Today's Parent Magazine and by the Canadian Children's Book Centre.


Meet the Winners

Athena Grantwell was born and raised in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. She is currently a graduate student at Acadia University, working toward a Master of Arts degree in English. Formac - Athena Grantwell 

Loie Dunn was born in Yarmouth, NS and currently calls Hillsborough, NB home. Her fairy tale flash fiction, Ladybug Cake, was published by Enchanted Conversation Magazine. Her YA seafaring fantasy, The Lost Sages, is being revised for submission.     Loie Dunn

William Sommerville was born in Halifax to a family with roots in every corner of the Maritimes. King’s Cross is his first novel.  He currently lives and works in Cambridge, Massachusetts with wife and fellow writer, Kat Read. William Sommerville 

Eligible Writers:
• Ages 18 to 40
• Canadian citizen or permanent resident, currently living in Atlantic Canada
Eligible Entries:
• Must be an original, unpublished work
• Not currently under publication contract
• Literary fiction or non-fiction written for adult, young adult and/or teen readers
• 20,000-60,000 words
• Written in English
• Text only

Entry Fee:
• The competition is free to enter!

Up to three winners will be selected
First Prize: $1,500 and a publication offer
Second Prize: $1,000
Third Prize: $500

How to Submit Your Entry:
• Submissions should be sent via mail
• Send both a printed copy, and an electronic version on a USB drive
• Please submit in 12-point font, double-spaced, one sided, on 8.5x11 pages
• Electronic version should be in a word document (.doc or .docx)
• A completed entry information form must be included with your submission Available for download at the bottom of this webpage

How Entries Are Evaluated:
• The panel of authors and editors will judge the competition. Their decision will be final
• Winners will be announced on this website 6 months after the postmark date, and notified by email
